![]() There’s a tinge of melancholy around the edges of Lateness, but Taylor and company aren’t mourning the coming winter – tracks like “Southern Grammar” and “Saturday’s Song” brim with more posi-vibes than an early Sunday tailgate party. An album of warm colors and earthy textures, Lateness is an album for warm sweaters and hard ciders, backyard firepits and late-autumn barbecues. You might wonder why Hiss Golden Messenger s new album is called Quietly Blowing It because bandleader M.C. But for everything there is a season and this fall is the season for Lateness. Lord knows the dude deserves it – he’s been making phenomenal country rock records for more than 15 years, heading the criminally underrated Court & Spark at the turn of the century. Our year has been bookended by two very different but wonderful albums by the same artist and that has us thinking about just handing all of our year-end list-space over to North Caolina songwriter and HGM leader M.C. January saw the reissue of HGM’s 2010 lost masterpiece – a stark solo record that saw most of its physical copies destroyed in a warehouse fire, limiting the scope of its release – and this week brings their Merge Records debut Lateness Of Dancers. Hear it for the first time (and second, and third, and so on) below. “I’m gonna get a little crazy.” It’s a simple song about the plight of the working stiff and the weekend’s elusive promise of release. “When Saturday comes, I might lose control,” Taylor intones. ![]() The lead single is “Saturday’s Song,” an easygoing groove that belies the weight bearing down on its narrator. It features William Tyler, Megafaun members Phil and Brad Cook, Mountain Man member Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and former full-time Hiss member Hirsch - essentially an all-star team of modern Southern folk-rock - and its name comes from a story by Eudora Welty, an author whose tales of the American South have a lot in common with Taylor’s own work. Lateness Of Dancers, due this September, is Hiss Golden Messenger’s first release for Merge. No matter how he dresses them up, the man knows how to write simple songs that cut to the core, and he’s about to release a new batch of them. And there is the expansive ordeal captured on last year’s Haw, a record that, like most Hiss Golden Messenger releases, applied the haunting sounds of Taylor’s solo recordings to full-bodied folk-rock reminiscent of Lambchop and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. There is the 2010 solo effort Bad Debt, reissued earlier this year, a stark, shiver-inducing collection Taylor recorded around the table of his North Carolina home.
